A big influence, however, was comic books and comic book art. Around the age of 7, I got my first comic book, Captain America, with art by Jack Kirby. It was one of those 3-packs that airports used to sell on the book stands. I discovered the Fantastic Four and Spider Man, and began to pick up the occasional comic from the local 7-11.
Feeling a bit burnt out from Los Angeles and the lack of social life, I decided to apply to art school and continue my education. I applied to three colleges, and picked UC Davis, since it had been home to the San Francisco art giants (Thiebaud, Maplethorpe, Adams, Diebenkorn, among others had all taught there over the years). When I got to Davis, I had never used oil paintings before. The first time I used them, I painted a model and her skin tunred out a bit muddy in color. But I figured I should keep practicing.
